Suitcase Call: FENIX visits U.S. and Canada

FENIX is on the lookout for suitcases that traveled from the Netherlands to the United States or Canada.

Between 1900 and 1969, about 3.5 million people departed form the Netherlands to make a new life in the Americas.

Two of the major destinations people moved to were Halifax and New York. To bridge the stories of the people who departed and arrived between these cities and the Netherlands, FENIX is inviting these stories to become part of the collection.

Hand in your suitcase at the Netherlands Consulate General in New York or at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. This way your suitcase will become part of FENIX collection!

The suitcase will be brought home to its original port of departure where it will be exhibited in a monumental maze of suitcases and stories about departure and arrival.

Send an email to koffers@fenix.nl including your name, a photo of the suitcase, and a brief description of the journey.

How can you participate?

The director of FENIX and her colleagues will welcome you with open arms, ready and eager to receive your suitcase and story.
