Srefidensi: Crossing Tables
#6 Raghenie Bhawanie – The Journey of Roti
An artist, chef or collective brings together flavours and migration stories in a sensory experience. Every third Thursday of the month at Plein.
The journey of roti
When you think of roti, do you picture a plate filled with chicken, potatoes, long beans, curry, and a boiled egg? You’re right, but also not quite. Roti is much more than the Surinamese version that’s popular in the Netherlands.
Recipe developer Raghenie Bhawanie takes you on a journey tracing roti’s path from India to Suriname, and from Suriname to the Netherlands. Along the way, she explores how this originally Indo-Surinamese dish was shaped by migration, colonial history, and cultural exchange.

About Raghenie Bhawanie
Raghenie Bhawanie is a recipe developer, cookbook author, and second-generation Surinamese living in the Netherlands. She is born in Leeuwarden but her parents are from Suriname, Raghenie grew up deeply rooted in Hindustani culture. Shaped by family, tradition, and the flavours of home.
