Showcase of artistic talent

During Rotterdam Art Week, South Explorer Invites takes over Plein with a showcase of artistic talent from Rotterdam South. South Explorer connects artists with each other and with the public, creating a programme centred on encounter and exchange.

Rotterdam South is home to a diverse creative community. Artists of different ages and backgrounds work across a wide range of practices. This day offers a glimpse into that diversity.

On this day, you can explore art in many forms, from photography and video to knitting and embroidery. Attend live performances, join workshops, and taste dishes from a local artists’ collective. The day ends with a drinks reception, a perfect opportunity to meet the artists and connect with other visitors.

Open call

Through an open call, South Explorer selected fourteen artists from Rotterdam South to share their practice during this showcase: Asja Shkolna, Float, Giuseppe Licari, Hüma Birgül, Jayclyne, Unanimous Artists United, Lore Pilzecker, Marta Sztabińska, The Migrant Kitchen (Chloe Detry, Gianni Blok, and Rita Baldé), Senka Milutinović & Бреме, Sohrab Kashani, Mohamad Khezri Moghadam, Valentino Stakel, and Sarah Leklye.

Practical Information

South Explorer Invites takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a drinks reception from 6 to 7 p.m.

Workshops

All workshops are free, but capacity is limited. Register via the link at the top of the page.

11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. | The Migrant Kitchen reading

During this reading, you will be introduced to influential books from Indonesian literature. These works explore themes such as (de)colonisation, the class system, identity, tradition, and modernity. Coffee, tea, and cake will be served during the talk.

12 to 1 p.m. | Whispering Through Stitches

A workshop by Lore Pilzecker that explores different forms of grief through embroidery. You contribute to an artwork in which personal gestures come together in a shared composition. In the process, you enter the realm of collective grief: how do we experience grief within society?

3:30 to 4:30 p.m. | Kilim Weaving

This kilim weaving workshop introduces participants to one of the oldest textile techniques. Everyone receives a small, simple loom and learns a quick, accessible kilim technique. In the workshop, you share gestures and rhythms and discover how weaving can be a way to feel, slow down, and connect with cultural traditions.
