Feeling and Folding

During Un Firi, Un Fow (meaning we feel, we fold), you’ll learn more about traditional Surinamese dress – and in particular, the angisa, the Afro-Surinamese headscarf. The angisa has a long history dating back to the late 19th century. In the past, the scarves were printed with symbols, texts, and drawings, given names, and carefully starched and folded into intricate shapes. Each one tells a story about a community and its heritage. Today, few new angisas are produced, as the process and materials are costly. Tailors & Wearers aims to preserve and revive this tradition.

Two new angisas

To mark 50 years of Surinamese independence, Tailors & Wearers are releasing two new angisas.
The designs were created through conversations with three generations of Rotterdam–Surinamese women. Together, they reflected on what independence means to them – and how that meaning could be expressed through cloth. The result: two vibrant angisas that connect past and present.

The project Angisa – 50 Years will be launched with a presentation, live performances, and the grani: a ceremonial moment in which a new angisa is dedicated to someone. During Un Firi, Un Fow, Tailors & Wearers will announce their upcoming Angisa Folding Guide, which will be officially presented in September next year.
