In Welcome on Board, you’ll discover how Rotterdam – together with other European port cities such as Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Antwerp – played a vital role in the wave of emigration to the Americas. Through the Holland-America Line (HAL), travellers from across Europe bought tickets for the long journey ahead. To the other side of the world, in search of better prospects and the promise of the unknown.
The exhibition takes you into the rich history of this building, once the largest warehouse in the world for loading and unloading cargo. Destroyed during the Second World War, it rose from the ashes to become a symbol of resilience – and of new stories waiting to be told.
