This year Steve McQueen received the Erasmus Prize 2026. At Fenix, Dana Linssen speaks with him about his vast body of work centering on art practice and film making, and how history shapes our present. The evening is accompanied musically with Dumama, a nomadic "future folk" musician and performer from South Africa.

Over Steve McQueen
Steve McQueen (1969) grew up in London. McQueen first gained recognition as a visual artist in the 1990s with experimental video works. In 2008 he made his feature film debut with Hunger.
With 12 Years a Slave (2013), the story of a free man sold into slavery, he became the first Black filmmaker to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Recently, his 34-hour film project Occupied City, which connects the occupation of Amsterdam with life in Amsterdam during the coronavirus pandemic, was projected onto the façade of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation is awarding the Erasmus Prize 2026 to Steve McQueen.

About the participants
Dana Linssen is a film journalist for, among others, NRC, former editor-in-chief of Filmkrant, a board member of the Kring van Nederlandse Filmjournalisten, and, as part of the Stimuleringsfonds voor de Journalistiek's Incubator program, is researching digital autonomy.
Dumama is a South African musician, performer, and sound researcher. In her music she brings together children's songs, stories, and personal memories with electronic sounds. In 2023, Dumama received the Prins Claus Seed Award.
