Join us for heri heri

Heri heri is a traditional Afro-Surinamese meal of cassava, sweet potato, plantain, salted fish and egg. This dish carries a rich story. It was created by enslaved people. With limited means, they found ways to feed one another, keep traditions alive and create community. Heri heri reflects that resilience and creativity. It is a dish that honours their legacy: it tells a story of survival, resourcefulness and connection.

Heirlooms

This year’s theme is Heirlooms. During the meal, this invites conversation about traditions, customs and memories. Take a moment together to reflect on what we carry with us, preserve and pass on.

Over de organisaties

Free Heri Heri For All is a nationwide initiative by KIP Republic and its partner organisations. On 1 July, the day of Keti Koti, free heri heri meals are handed out at locations across the Netherlands as a form of remembrance, recognition and connection. By sharing the meal freely, not only is a tradition kept alive, but space is also created to reflect together on a shared past.

Soul Food Lovers brings Caribbean dishes and soul food together in culinary experiences that connect people. Starting from food as a carrier of heritage and community, they share flavours and stories from Caribbean cuisine.
