What can a line, sign or emoji communicate without words? From ink on paper to a symbol on a screen, the way we write and communicate is changing. Yingda Dong introduces you to Chinese calligraphy and contemporary symbols. Discover how movement, form and association create meaning, and how you can use them to develop your own visual language.
Write an Emoji! explores what happens to a craft when the world around it changes. You’ll look not only at calligraphy as an age-old tradition, but also at how this art form can evolve and take on new meanings.
About Yingda Dong
Yingda Dong is an illustrator and PhD researcher at LUCA School of Arts / KU Leuven in Ghent. His work explores how different cultural perspectives come together in visual language and illustration. His work has been shown at the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition, Grafixx Festival and in his solo exhibition Tabi in Japan.

About Migrating Crafts
Wanwai Shum and Augustina Lavickaitė are designers and the initiators of Migrating Crafts. Through the project, they explore how crafts travel with people and change through new places, cultures and techniques. For this workshop series, they bring together makers from different backgrounds and craft disciplines at Fenix.
