This summer holiday, Plein is home to a special world postbox: a writing desk with 200 compartments, one for every country, inspired by Hotel Europe by Harald Vlugt.
On Wednesday 26 August, Rotterdam-based writer, poet and storyteller Wessel Klootwijk will help you write a personal, funny or meaningful message on a postcard. Everyone is welcome to join, with or without writing experience. At the end of the workshop, the cards will be sent on their way.
About Wessel Klootwijk
Wessel Klootwijk (1993) is a Rotterdam-based writer, poet and storyteller with a background in architecture and construction. He captures everyday and fleeting moments in words, bringing the city to life through poetry, prose and live performance. His work moves between the everyday and the expansive, the tender and the critical, always attentive to the beauty that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Practical information
The workshop is free and takes place on Plein from 16:00 to 17:00. There is no need to register in advance: simply drop by and join in.
You can buy a postcard and stamp at the Kiosk: €2 for post within the Netherlands and €4 for international post.

About Hotel Europe
The world postbox stands next to Hotel Europe (1997) by artist Harald Vlugt. The artwork can be seen on Plein until Sunday 30 August. Four large tables together form a map of Europe, made up of hundreds of envelopes.
In 1997, Vlugt sent 715 letters to cities across Europe. He addressed them to himself at a fictional address: H. Vlugt, Hotel Europe. Many of the envelopes were returned as undeliverable and together form the map. The empty spaces represent letters that never came back.
About the partner
Het Veerhuis Rotterdam is a writing centre by the River Maas and a home for Rotterdam’s writing community. Both emerging and experienced writers can work, learn and meet one another there. Through workspaces, workshops, talent development programmes and literary events, Het Veerhuis provides space for different forms of writing, language and storytelling.
