Esther Kokmeijer, Agreement with Nature, 2015-2020

Antarctica, the world’s oceans, the atmosphere and outer space officially belong to no one. They do not have their own constitution. The laws that apply to you are determined by the passport you carry. These areas are protected by international treaties. For the work Agreement with Nature (2015-2020), visual artist Esther Kokmeijer printed four treaties on porcelain.

Esther printed the four treaties on a total of 222 porcelain sheets, each half a millimetre thick. By using this material, Esther is emphasising the vulnerability of the treaties, but also their strength.

“Antarctica belongs to no one and therefore to us all. I find the Antarctic Treaty very special – you could call it the most successful political cooperation in the world.”
- Esther Kokmeijer
“Porcelain is a very strong material. And yet the wafer-thin sheets are fragile. Producing them is complicated, because a sheet like this can break easily. Many sheets are lost during the production process. Sometimes when you take hold of a sheet, it suddenly shatters.”
- Esther Kokmeijer
